Statistically up to 80% of us will suffer with low back pain (or lumbago) at some point in our lifetime. There are many different causes including poor posture, wear and tear, slipped discs and muscle strains amongst others. Additional symptoms such as pain and numbness into the legs may accompany the low back pain. Most causes of low back pain are not serious and respond well to osteopathic treatment. This means irritation or "trapping" of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that supplies the back of the leg. Most cases of sciatica are caused by a problem in the low back or trauma/irritation to the nerve itself which can be relieved through osteopathy.
