Although his family roots show a long association in all forms of horticultural interests going back over 300 years with records showing that his ancestors were once gardeners to the famous Sir John Courtown Edward Shelley-Rolls, 6th Baronet of Castle Goring, Sussex. Shelley-Rolls was the son of Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Charles Shelley, 5th Baronet, and his wife Mary Jane Jemima Stopford. He was appointed High Sheriff of Hampshire in 1928. Shelley-Rolls married Eleanor Georgiana Rolls, daughter of John Rolls, 1st Baron Llangattock and sister of Charles Rolls co founder of Roll-Royce.
