The Picnic Basket opened in 1992. Having spent time working in London and America, I moved back to my native North East and quickly noticed that the only fast food on offer in Durham city was soggy sandwiches and second rate sausage rolls. The famous city of Durham with its thriving university, deserved more!! The next six months was spent researching ingredients and talking to local suppliers. I then found the perfect location – 7 New Elvet in Durham city. It's situated on a busy road opposite the University (We're now an institution within the universities student population, past & present). On 18th of September 1992 The Picnic Basket opened its doors for the first time. We use the very best local produce with deliveries of market fresh fruit and vegetables, speciality breads, meats and cheeses. We serve a wide range of salads, oven baked jacket potatoes, home-made cakes and scones. And when it gets cold we'll rustle up some delicious home-made soup. We've recently been voted North East sandwich shop of the year!! An award we're all really proud of! If all that isn't enough to tempt you into the shop, to give you an idea of our dedication to perfection, we have been awarded a five star hygiene rating. We are amongst an elite group of establishments that have met the highest of standards in culinary cleanliness.
