Suttons has been trading for over 70 years as a family business. The family originally lived in London but when war broke they were evacuated to the Essex countryside. The family settled at the current High Street location in Wickford during the 1940’s. The old house pictured on this page was the original Wickford store. The business : S.H Suttons Ltd sold much needed items such as : Vinegar, firelighters, DIY items, blue bags, wheelbarrows, tin baths and paraffin; which was delivered to local homes for heating supplies. If you needed your broom handle fitted Mr Sutton was more than happy to oblige. Gifts were gift wrapped at Christmas in our distinct pink paper. If you have seen ‘open all hours’ on T.V you will have seen the brown coats that Arkwright wears, these were a familiar sight at Suttons. Mrs Sutton would wear a more feminine piny and would cook lunch for all the staff (which wasn’t many in those days). Over the years the local people got to know Mr and Mrs Sutton well and Mr Sutton felt that the Customers were more like friends. As time passed by their children worked in the store too and Mr Sutton junior took over the store from his father in time, expanding the store to include two other stores and our warehouses.
