Vic Prince started his business in 1972 located in High Street, Burton on Trent. He quickly outgrew those premises and moved to the Bargates Centre, where Roy Bates joined him in partnership in 1980. This was the start of the business name Prince & Bates. In 1987 they realised that the town centre was a more attractive proposition, and they moved to the current premises in Station Street in 1988. Vic Prince retired in 1999, but a further three optometrists; Nigel Sheffield in 1994, Pete Dartnell in 2004 and Steve Marshall in 2007, have joined the partnership. Roy Bates left the Partnership in March 2009 and continued as an Optometrist on a part time basis until leaving Prince & Bates in September 2011. Bryan Bates retired in 2013, with Laurie Stevenson joining the Partnership having previously worked as a dispensing optician with Prince & Bates for a number of years.
