Managers of land with trees have a duty of care to ensure that they remain in a safe condition, and to discharge that duty inspections should be carried out at appropriate intervals. The frequency and detail of such inspections will depend upon circumstances and surveys would therefore be tailored to the client’s specific requirements. Surveys may range between the individual assessment of small numbers of specimen trees through to the inspection of large populations of street or parkland trees. The information so recorded can be used to create a database to monitor tree safety, providing an invaluable management tool. Where it is a requirement to accurately plot tree locations within the environment, use may be made of computerised mapping software (GIS) and Geo-positioning systems (GPS).
