Be aware - if your annual turnover is greater than the VAT registration limit, you will have to keep all of your accounting records on computer, and possibly in more detail than you have done previously (i.e. a cash book, or cash book only software, will no longer be acceptable) This will be from 1st April 2019 earliest, 1st June 2019 latest - depending on your VAT return quarters (and if you are registered for quarterly vat). Your software doesn't need to be MVD compliant until next year, although you will need to use "bridging software" to file your VAT returns. For this first year, there may be manual re-keying of figures of figures from your own software into the bridging software. I already have MVD compliant software (QuickBooks), and so will be able to file for my clients. I have some limited spaces to take on new clients for either all of their digital accounting or for filing their VAT returns where they have recorded all of their own data digitally.
