This is a village half a mile from Esh Winning. My Great Grandfather William Field, or Old Bill†as the family referred to him, along with my Great Grandmother Annie, worked in the fish shop at St Georges Hall Cornsay Colliery. They used to rent from Dick Ritchie. In 1915 my Great Grandfather was hawking fish with his pony and cart (in his spare time), around the local villages, and was also a hewer†(extracting coal with a small pick) down the pit at Cornsay., This web site is dedicated to the Field Family and the Fish Shop and the history of the local surrounding villages and Durham Coalfields and its Miners.
