Traditional acupuncture is based on the Chinese philosophy of the flow of qi (energy) through the pathways of channels/meridians that connect all systems of the body. To ensure good health the qi needs to flow freely, thus allowing well-being to be maintained. If the qi flow becomes obstructed or inhibited (usually due to emotional disturbances, physical overwork, poor nutrition, infection or physical trauma), illness and pain can occur. The insertion of very fine needles into various acupuncture points along the meridians stimulates the self-healing process of the body and thus allows balance and good health to be restored.
