All domestic cars were required to have their brakes, lights and steering checked (commercial vehicle MOT's were introduced in 1962). The first MOT in Sefton was performed by Chapel Garage on a blue 1930's Morris Minor, owned by Ida Lythgoe, who's husband (Ken) decided casually to take the car for it's first check. Upon arrival at Chapel Garage it was clear he was first to embark on these 'new' checks. As the Crosby Herald was positioned next to the garage back then, Kenneth decided to mark the moment by inviting the paper to note the occasion with an article on the first MOT test in Sefton. The photograph on the right shows Ida and Ken driving the car with a smile, presumably as it had just passed its first test.
