Closed-circuit television CCTV, also known as video surveillance, is the use of video cameras to transmit pictures to a digital video recorder DVR and a limited set of monitors. Though almost all video cameras fit this definition, the term is most often applied to those used for surveillance in areas that may need monitoring such as shops, and outside public areas due to increases in technology systems have become more mainstream and we now find ourselves installing more and more to residential properties where security is needed. Surveillance using CCTV is common in many areas. In recent years, the use of CCTV has advanced more rapidly on residential properties and is often used in law enforcement, where cameras located on the property can be used to build up a picture on any events that have taken place. In Public areas and residential dwellings, CCTV equipment may be used to observe cars, people, animals, gates and walls etc from a central point using motion recording and alerts or 24 hour recording and back up for viewing at a later time. There are millions of surveillance cameras in the uk providing invaluble footage of events that unfold on a day to day basis due to increased crime rates.
