He became a District Councillor during his time there. He then took a role in policy advice in the Government's Scottish Office, including on Scottish Law, followed by action research for Age Concern Scotland on ways of providing housing advice to elderly people. After a spell running a vegetarian restaurant, he undertook law conversion and professional courses. He joined Sonia Behr as her trainee in 1995 and qualified fully as a solicitor in 1997. He became a partner in Behr & Co in 1998. He has therefore an exceptional breadth of work experience, in research, local government, central government, the voluntary sector, and in small business, as well as many years in legal practice.
