Acorn Lodge is a notable Victorian family house in the centre of Hornsea offering two large accessible self catering apartments, one of which has a wet room. Hornsea itself has its own Freeport shopping centre offering plenty of bargains and for those looking for a quieter pace, there are miles of sand dunes along the shoreline. Hornsea also has the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire, Hornsea Mere, which has over 200 species of wild birds visiting it every year. For those keen on wildlife there is the RSPB centre at Bempton near Flamborough, famous for its Puffin population. Acorn Lodge was built by Joseph Armytage Wade in 1879 and is sometimes known as the Fish Scale House because of the unusual tiling that faces the external walls.
